Why The Bills Fans Are #30 On Facebook is about to change.

Buffalo Bills Fans didn’t have to wait long for the team to turn into a winner! The team got warmed up during the first three years in the league (1960 – 62), and they were then in the playoffs in ’63, and then won back to back Championships in ’64 & ’65.

Back in the post season the next year, they lost in the conference championship game, but at this point Bills fans felt like they would be there every year. It was 8 years before they won another playoff birth (1974).

The stretch from 1967 – 1987 disappointed Bills Fans with the team providing just 3 post season appearances, but Marv Levy had arrived in ’86 and things were looking good. From 1988 – ’96, Levy had the Bills Fans celebrating 8 playoff births out of the nine years.

The problem is that it seems all Bills Fans can remember is that their beloved team and head coach reached the Super Bowl four strait years (1990 – ’93) and still haven’t needed to build a Lombardy trophy case!

Levy was gone following the 94 season, and the Bills Fans have been introduced to six head coaches in the 16 years that followed. I’ve always believed that the Bills Fans who have stuck with the team through that kind of disappointment would, without a doubt, have to be the greatest fans on earth!

Wade Phillips took the team to the playoffs his first two years as head coach, but many argue that it was with the team that Marv Levy built! Then, as fate would have it, Bills fans have suffered through 13 years without a playoff birth. You want the good news now?

Doug Marone is in town (WHO?). The Bills new (2013) HC Marone bounced back and forth between coaching O-lines and Tight Ends for 9 years in the college ranks before the NY Jets (yeah, those other guys) hired him for 4 years to coach their O-line.

He then got his first shot as an Offensive Coordinator for the Saints, but three years later was offered the Head Coaching spot at Syracuse. Being a city boy from the Bronx, he had to take the opportunity to get the Top Dog experience, and it paid off.

Sporting News called ita gutsy movewhen the Bills selected him over two available coaches with Super Bowl experience (Lovie Smith & Whisenhunt), but as we should know by now, just getting there does not impress the Bills front office.

They wanted a fresh approach, and they got it with Marone, but with a 50% win percentage as a college head coach it gave me pause as to whether Bills Fans are simply in for more disappointment.

Now that the first season is over, and the new (2013 first round pick) QB EJ Manuel got 10 starts to help him get past the rookie jitters, it’s on to bigger a better things in 2014.

I believe that all but the new crop of rookies have settled in with the Marone program, and this season the team will take the next step towards a winning program. It’s early, and hope springs eternal this time of year.

Former Lions HC Jim Schwartz is one of the guys Marone was referring to when he said he was going to “get experienced coordinators” to assist him. However, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is quite the opposite.

Hackett has just 4 years NFL experience at the entry level (Offensive Quality Control), but was Marone’s OC (for 2 years) at Syracuse and there’s a lot to be said for that comfort level of working together for three years.

Remember RB Tyrone Wheatly? Well, after a couple of years coaching under Marone at Syracuse he’s the new running backs coach. His RB tandem of CJ Spiller & Fred Jackson produced more than 1,800 yards in 2013.

All of that has allowed QB EJ Manuel to average just 30 attempts a game while easing into his new starting role. If you missed the article,Facebook Ranks NFL Fans”, then you can follow that link.
