Why The Chiefs Fans Are #24 On Facebook
Why The Chiefs Fans Are #24 On Facebook requires a history lesson.
The Chiefs won a Championship as the Dallas Texans in 1962. They promptly moved to Kansas City the very next year, so we could say that 1963 is when Kansas City Chiefs Fans were first born. Four years later they recorded a Super Bowl loss but redeemed themselves just three years later (1969) by taking the trophy to KC.
From 1960 – 1974 (15 years) Hank Stram took them to the playoffs 5 times (33%), but from 1972 until 1989 (18 years) the Chiefs made the postseason tournament just once (in 86). Fortunately that was Marty Schottenheimer’s 1st year.
During Schottenheimer’s 10 years he took them to 7 post season appearances, but reached the Conference Finals just once. Schottenheimer left in 1998, and since then (16 years), the Chiefs have reached the playoffs 4 times (25%).
Three different Head Coaches in the last 5 years may not sound like a recipe for success, but the switch from one year HC Romeo Crennel to Andy Reid looks like a no brainer from hind sight. I would not have bet real money that Reid would engineer an about face so quickly.
Scoring 9 strait wins to start the season is a pretty text book turn around from a 2-14 season, and Chiefs Fans were riding high! Explain to me why a bye week always lands in the wrong place! When a team is HOT they don’t want time off!
Although the last half of the season brought just two more wins (and some key injuries to valuable talent), Chiefs Fans can see a very bright future with Andy Reid. It’s far too early to grade his two drafts, but it all looks good on paper.
This year will test the metal of all the ‘West’ Division’s teams, since they all play each other! The two divisions were the best in their respective conferences last year (2013), and I see no reason to believe that won’t continue into this season.
HC Reid needs to figure out how to get back to the post season tournament this year, or the tomahawks could be flying in his direction. That isn’t an easy task when facing the competition that the NFL has chosen for him this year.
